Résumé Formats

Chronological résumés are organized in reverse chronological order, with your most recent work listed first and going backward in time. This format is the most common and carries the most credibility with hiring managers.

Functional or "Competency-based" résumés focus on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. They are most often used by people who are changing careers, have gaps in their employment history, or have minimal work history.

Combination or Hybrid résumés combine elements of both chronological and functional résumés, listing your skills and experience first, and then your employment history. It is the best résumé format for those who have performed basically the same duties for many years, regardless of the number of jobs held.

The Curriculum Vitae or CV (Latin for "life story") format is used primarily when applying for international, academic, education, scientific or research positions. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds, teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other pertinent details.

Federal résumés must be specific and will list a detailed work history, military service job descriptions, rank and time of service if applicable, education and training, special skills and certifications, awards, publications, volunteer work and memberships.
