Cover Letters

While a great résumé can open doors, a compelling cover letter is an equally important component of your employment campaign.

Every résumé that you submit in your job search should be accompanied by a cover letter. This primary support document must be targeted to the specific position you are applying for, relating your skills and experience to those detailed in the job posting, and explaining why you are perfectly suited to the position.

Your cover letter is a strategic marketing tool and the first document an employer sees, so it is often the first impression you will make. It is not a rehash of your résumé, but is your chance to say, in plain English, what you offer and what you will bring to the position. Using the active voice, your cover letter should convey enthusiasm and allow your personality to shine through. It is, in essence, a demonstration of your communication skills.

Powerful cover letters are comprehensive, clear, concise and compelling. Three or four high-impact paragraphs should be enough to tell the reader how your skills and accomplishments relate to performing the position for which you applied.
